ScreenFlow 1.2 released
August 11, 2008
Vara Software’s fantastic screencasting application, ScreenFlow, has just been updated to version 1.2. Brett and I’ve both raved about ScreenFlow in the past, but the more I use the program, the more I love it. If you are even marginally interested in doing screencasts, you owe it to yourself to give ScreenFlow a shot.
Some of the highlights from version 1.2:
- French and German localization
- Redesigned keyboard modifier display
- You can now copy and paste clips and actions in the same
Grandialer, an iPhone app for GrandCentral
August 10, 2008
If you’re one of the lucky ones who got in on the GrandCentral beta, then you might be interested in a new iPhone app that integrates with the GrandCentral service. Grandialer (iTunes link) allows you to use your iPhone to call people using your GrandCentral telephone number.
The service can be used on EDGE since it’s not a VoIP service. The application works by connecting your calls through GrandCentral and ringing back your iPhone. To… Continue reading
pTerm released, update due soon
August 9, 2008
Newly arrived in the App Store is pTerm, an iPhone port of the PuTTY terminal emulator. It supports SSH and Telnet, among other things, and has a built-in Control key.
But developer Eric Maland has been in touch with us to say that a 1.1 update is already on its way (it has been submitted to Apple and is awaiting approval). Unfortunately a handful of “major crashy bugs” (as Eric puts it) were discovered after… Continue reading
Camino 1.6.3 released
August 9, 2008
Filed under: Software, Internet, Internet Tools
Camino, the best Gecko-based browser NOT named Firefox 3, has just been updated to version 1.6.3. This update, which seems to have rolled in 1.6.2 along with it (at least I never got the 1.6.2 notification, and I use Camino pretty frequently), sports the latest update to the Gecko 1.8.1 branch, including several critical stability and security fixes with better ad-blocking. Plus, it no longer crashes if a pop-up is displayed while dragging a bookmark.Even… Continue reading
First Look: EccoNote
August 8, 2008
EccoNote is a nice tiny free audio recording app - one of many similar recorders available in the App Store.I use the word “little” deliberately, because EccoNote is very easy. In a good way. You can record your audio notes, you can play them back, and that’s about it. There are no settings to mess with. The audio quality is very good and the controls nice and obvious. The only odd thing is that the developer’s web site

Export your Yojimbo database to a Tiddlywiki
August 6, 2008
You’ve got all your iStuff inside Yojimbo (hands up who loves Yojimbo and I’ll count, starting with me), but for some reason you need to get it on to another personal, perhaps one running a different OS. What to do?
This AppleScript takes your entire Yojimbo library (well, everything except the PDFs) and exports it to a Tiddlywiki that you can carry around and view on pretty much any personal.
I state “any computer” but iPhone users shouldn’t…… Continue reading
Diamond, the rich text editor that thinks different
August 6, 2008
Diamond is a free rich text editor with a difference. Lots of differences, actually, which combine to make it quite appealing. Developer Geoffrey Alexander has recently released Diamond 3, which makes this an excellent time for you to download and give it a try.
How is Diamond different? Diamond windows look different. Sometimes they’re hardly there. They may or may not have title bars. They may or might not hover above a background (flat color, or photographic, it’s up to you)… Continue reading

Apple has released the 2.0.1 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch, and as you can see above, it brings the much-awaited “Bug fixes” feature to bear. We first heard about bug repairs way back at WWDC ‘07, and since then there’s been much speculation on Apple blogs of all kinds as to just what effects a feature like “bug fixes” will have on the market.
We’re… Continue reading
TUAW Sleep-off: Ambiance vs. aSleep vs. your Mac

Filed under: Software, Features, TUAW Faceoff
Everybody needs to sleep, and more than just a few hours each night. It’s not just a matter of being in a foul mood all day; there are some pretty serious physiological effects of sleep deprivation. Since you tend to learn the most when you do things incorrectly, I know plenty about lost sleep. Anything that helps my insomnia is worth checking into, so I’ve spent some time looking…… Continue reading
